A Long-Step, Cutting Plane Algorithm for Linear and Convex Programming

چکیده
A cutting plane method for linear programming is described. This method is an extension of Atkinson and Vaidya’s algorithm, and uses the central trajectory. The logarithmic barrier function is used explicitly, motivated partly by the successful implementation of such algorithms. This makes it possible to maintain primal and dual iterates, thus allowing termination at will, instead of having to solve to completion. This algorithm has the same complexity (O(nL) iterations) as Atkinson and Vaidya’s algorithm, but improves upon it in that it is a ‘long-step’ version, while theirs is a ‘short-step’ one in some sense. For this reason, this algorithm is computationally much more promising as well. This algorithm can be of use in solving combinatorial optimization problems with large numbers of constraints, such as the Traveling Salesman Problem.

Polynomial interior point cutting plane methods
Polynomial cutting plane methods based on the logarithmic barrier function and on the volumetric center are surveyed. These algorithms construct a linear programming relaxation of the feasible region, find an appropriate approximate center of the region, and call a separation oracle at this approximate center to determine whether additional constraints should be added to the relaxation. Typical...
متن کاملA Long Step Cutting Plane Algorithm That Uses the Volumetric Barrier
A cutting plane method for linear/convex programming is described. It is based on the volumetric barrier, introduced by Vaidya. The algorithm is a long step one, and has a complexity of O(nL) Newton steps. This is better than the O(n √ mL) complexity of non-cutting plane long step methods based on the volumetric barrier, but it is however worse than Vaidya’s original O(nL) result (which is not ...
متن کاملA Feasible Directions Method for Nonsmooth Convex Optimization
We propose a new technique for minimization of convex functions not necessarily smooth. Our approach employs an equivalent constrained optimization problem and approximated linear programs obtained with cutting planes. At each iteration a search direction and a step length are computed. If the step length is considered “non serious”, a cutting plane is added and a new search direction is comput...
متن کاملSolving Convex MINLP Optimization Problems Using a Sequential Cutting Plane Algorithm
In this article we look at a new algorithm for solving convex mixed integer nonlinear programming problems. The algorithm uses an integrated approach, where a branch and bound strategy is mixed with solving nonlinear programming problems at each node of the tree. The nonlinear programming problems, at each node, are not solved to optimality, rather one iteration step is taken at each node and t...
متن کاملFinite Disjunctive Programming Characterizations for General Mixed-Integer Linear Programs
In this paper, we give a finite disjunctive programming procedure to obtain the convex hull of general mixed-integer linear programs (MILP) with bounded integer variables. We propose a finitely convergent convex hull tree algorithm which constructs a linear program that has the same optimal solution as the associated MILP. In addition, we combine the standard notion of sequential cutting planes...
